Lean Startup thinking for the social sector
Ann Mei Chang’s curriculum, combining experience in both Silicon Valley and with USAID, seemingly makes her the perfect person to copy Eric Ries’s Lean Startup thinking to the non-profit sector.
Nevertheless, the result is a bit disappointing: the author brings nothing new to the table. All of the breakthrough strategies, scaling methods and how to quickly iterate come from the Lean Startup. The word ‘purpose’ is just added to the mix.
What she does add, are stories from a wide array of organizations, that may serve as an inspiration to many. This makes the book a fine introduction to the social sector and its challenges; the real startup lessons, even for non-profit ones, can better be learned elsewhere.
