As the year comes to a close, it’s time for a “best of” roundup! Because of the eventful nature of this year, I found myself reading less than in previous years. However, I still enjoyed some truly fantastic books. Here are the top reads from the 30+ books I delved into in 2023, spanning bothContinueContinue reading “The 8 best books I read in 2023”

My 2022 in books and films
I love making lists: books I read, great music, interesting podcasts, films I saw, ‘best of’ etc. Like a truffle pig, looking for hidden gems. Needless to say, 2022 has been an intense year in many ways. Apparently I’m drawn to non-fiction more than fiction when trying to make sense of all life’s throwing atContinueContinue reading “My 2022 in books and films”
The 6 best books I read in 2020
Quite a year. I spent my time with Hitler, the Apocalyps, Zombies, War, Future and History. Appeasing Hitler, Tim Bouverie Station Eleven, Emily St John Mandel De Stamhouder, Alexander Münninghof The Ministry for the Future, Kim Stanley Robinson World War Z, Max Brooks History has begun, Bruno Macaes
Stoicijnse Levenswijsheid
Boek
Fact Club for the Climate
Drawdown promises the most comprehensive plan to reverse global warming. And it does just that. It’s a great overview of the real issue at hand (air conditioning!), the possible impact of climate solutions, and technologies that “can begin to reverse the buildup of atmospheric carbon by mid-century”. Love it. Book Website
Meandering with a purpose
A little gem amidst the hysterical, positive thinking, self-help literature. The basic premise of the book is that the effort to try to feel happy is often precisely the thing that makes us miserable. Some of us probably know this to be true, and yet we can’t help ourselves. We want to feel secure. Alas,ContinueContinue reading “Meandering with a purpose”
There’s no formula
Hailed as one of the start-up bibles, this classic on how to build a business does indeed hold great lessons. Horowitz manages to avoid most of the worn-off cliches on the need for excellent leadership and relentless focus, and instead shows the more brutal side of building out an idea. This is due to hisContinueContinue reading “There’s no formula”
Leaders do matter
Not only has Tim Bouverie written a real page-turner, this beautiful book is also a great reminder of the importance of moral courage and thorough intellectual analysis. Many other narratives of the European pre-war years portray Chamberlain as a fool, as Hitler’s puppet. Bouverie is more nuanced: the prime minister was a good man withContinueContinue reading “Leaders do matter”
History has begun – Bruno Macaes
Again, a great, counter-intuitive, book by Bruno Macaes, who’s gaining real traction as one of today’s most interesting thinkers – and prolific twiterazzi. After China and Europe he now turns to the US.His thesis on the United States is not as multi-layered as his last two books on Eurasia and the Belt and Road, butContinueContinue reading “History has begun – Bruno Macaes”
The Precipice – Toby Ord ****
Existential risk and the future of humanity, luidt de ondertitel.
The Glass Hotel – Emily St John Mandel ****
Station Eleven – Emily St John Mandel *****
TwintigContinueContinue reading “Station Eleven – Emily St John Mandel *****”
Larger than life *****
